Founded in 2017 by two former Formula SAE members, Mircea Cozmei and Everett Kinyon, Washington Superbike was established to pioneer the electric motorcycle of the future. Cozmei and Kinyon started the team with a mission to provide students with hands-on experience in design, manufacturing, and testing. They also aimed to document and validate engineering decisions while inspiring and educating students about the world of motorsports.
"Getting to work on motorcycles that will race wheel-to-wheel is exciting," Cozmei says. "There is so much talent at the undergraduate level. Electric vehicles are here to stay, and we must ensure we keep driving interest and innovation in this domain."
The total cost of the project came to approximately $6,000, excluding the original cost of the Kawasaki Ninja. The motorcycle was powered by a ME0907 DC motor, capable of delivering a peak torque of 38 Nm and operating at a maximum voltage of 72V. At 5000 rpm, the motor produced an impressive 30 horsepower. The battery pack was built using three Multistar 16000mAh, 22.2V packs, resulting in a total battery voltage of 66.6V. This setup enabled the motorcycle to achieve a 0-60 mph time of just 6.8 seconds.
